A Reading from the book of Ecclesiastes               1:2, 12-14; 2:18-23

Vanity of vanities, says the Teacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity.

I, the Teacher, when king over Israel in Jerusalem, applied my mind to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven; it is an unhappy business that God has given to human beings to be busy with. I saw all the deeds that are done under the sun; and see, all is vanity and a chasing after wind.

I hated all my toil in which I had toiled under the sun, seeing that I must leave it to those who come after me—and who knows whether they will be wise or foolish? Yet they will be master of all for which I toiled and used my wisdom under the sun. This also is vanity. So, I turned and gave my heart up to despair concerning all the toil of my labors under the sun, because sometimes one who has toiled with wisdom and knowledge and skill must leave all to be enjoyed by another who did not toil for it. This also is vanity and a great evil. What do mortals get from all the toil and strain with which they toil under the sun? For all their days are full of pain, and their work is a vexation; even at night their minds do not rest. This also is vanity.

Reader        The Word of the Lord.

People         Thanks be to God.

Let us say together Psalm 49:1-2

Hear this, all you peoples; give ear, all inhabitants of the world, both low and high, rich and poor together. My mouth shall speak wisdom; the meditation of my heart shall be understanding.

I will incline my ear to a proverb; I will solve my riddle to the music of the harp. Why should I fear in times of trouble, when the iniquity of my persecutors surrounds me, those who trust in their wealth and boast of the abundance of their riches?

Truly, no ransom avails for one’s life, there is no price one can give to God for it. For the ransom of life is costly, and can never suffice that one should live on forever and never see the grave.

When we look at the wise, they die; fool and dolt perish together and leave their wealth to others. Their graves are their homes forever, their dwelling places to all generations, though they named lands their own.

Mortals cannot abide in their pomp; they are like the animals that perish. Such is the fate of the foolhardy, the end of those who are pleased with their lot. Selah

Like sheep they are appointed for Sheol; Death shall be their shepherd; straight to the grave they descend, and their form shall waste away; Sheol shall be their home. But God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol, for he will receive me.

Do not be afraid when some become rich, when the wealth of their houses increases. For when they die they will carry nothing away; their wealth will not go down after them.

Though in their lifetime they count themselves happy—for you are praised when you do well for yourself—they will go to the company of their ancestors, who will never again see the light.

HYMN #343 BLUE            Shepherd of Souls, Refresh and Bless, v. 1,3,4

Shepherd of souls, refresh and bless thy chosen pilgrim flock with manna in the wilderness, with water from the rock.

Be known to us in breaking bread, and do not then depart; Savior, abide with us, and spread thy table in our heart.

Lord, sup with us in love divine, thy Body and thy Blood, that living bread, that heavenly wine, be our immortal food.

THE GOSPEL                                        Luke 12:13-21

Celebrant    The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.

People         Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.” But he said to him, “Friend, who set me to be a judge or arbitrator over you?” And he said to them, “Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.” Then he told them a parable: “The land of a rich man produced abundantly. And he thought to himself, ‘What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?’ Then he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.’ And I will say to my soul, ‘Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.’ But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God.”

Celebrant    The Gospel of the Lord.

People         Praise to you, Lord Christ.

SERMON                                                                                                          Pastor Neil

THE NICENE CREED (please stand)

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son, he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

HYMN #174 BLUE                                    At the Lamb’s High Feast We Sing v. 1-3

At the Lamb’s high feast, we sing. Praise to our victorious King, who has washed us in the tide. Flowing from his pierced side; Praise we him whose love divine. Gives his sacred blood for wine. Gives his body for the feast, Christ the Victim, Christ the Priest.

Where the paschal blood is poured, Death’s dark angel sheathes his sword; Israel’s hosts triumphant go through the wave that drowns the foe. Praise we Christ, whose blood was shed, Paschal Victim, Paschal Bread; with sincerity and love. Eat we manna from above.

Mighty victim from on high, hell’s fierce powers beneath thee lie; thou hast conquered in the fight, thou have brought us life and light. Now no more can death appall, now no more the grave enthrall: thou have opened paradise, and in thee thy saints shall rise.

Celebrant     Please stand as you are able.

PRESENTATION HYMN #513 BLUE          Like the Murmur of the Dove’s Song v. 1-2

Like the murmur of the dove’s song, like the challenge of her flight, like the vigor of the wind’s rush, like the new flame’s eager might: come, Holy Spirit, come.

To the members of Christ’s Body, to the branches of the Vine, to the Church in faith assembled, to her midst as gift and sign: come, Holy Spirit, come.

THE HOLY COMMUNION

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

Celebrant     The Lord be with you.

People                  And also with you.

Celebrant             Lift up your hearts.

People                   We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant             Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People                   It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is truly right to glorify you, Father, and to give you thanks; for you alone are God, living and true, dwelling in light inaccessible from before time and forever. Fountain of life and source of all goodness, you made all things and fill them with your blessing; you created them to rejoice in the splendor of your radiance.

Countless throngs of angels stand before you to serve you night and day; and, beholding the glory of your presence, they offer you unceasing praise. Joining with them, and giving voice to every creature under heaven, we acclaim you, and glorify your Name, as we sing:

SANCTUS                                                                           S-130

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest, Hosanna in the highest.

We acclaim you, holy Lord, glorious in power. You formed us in your own image, giving the whole world into our care, so that we might rule and serve all your creatures. In our sinfulness, you did not abandon us. In mercy you came to our help, so that we might find you. Again and again you called us into covenant with you. Through the prophets, and the mothers and fathers of the church, you taught us to hope for salvation.

You loved the world so much that you sent your only Son to be our Savior. Incarnate by the Holy Spirit, born of Mary, he lived as one of us. To the poor he proclaimed the good news of salvation; to prisoners, freedom; to the sorrowful, joy. He gave himself up to death; and, rising from the grave, he made the whole creation anew. He sent the Holy Spirit to complete his work in the world, to bring to fulfillment the sanctification of all.

When the hour had come for him to be glorified by you, and having loved his own who were in the world, at supper with them he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat: This is my body, given for you.”

After supper he took the wine; again, he offered thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink this: It is the blood of the new Covenant, shed for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you do these things, do them for the remembrance of me.”

Said together We celebrate this memorial of our redemption. We recall Christ’s death and proclaim his resurrection and ascension to your right hand. We await his coming in glory.

We offer to you, from the gifts you have given us, this bread and this cup; we praise you and we bless you.

In your goodness and mercy, may your Holy Spirit descend upon us, and upon these gifts, ☩ sanctifying them—the bread of life and the cup of salvation. Grant that all who share this bread and cup may become one body and one spirit, a living sacrifice in Christ.

Ensure our inheritance with your Mother Mary, with prophets, apostles, and all the saints who have found favor with you, through your Son Jesus Christ.

Said together Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, forever and ever. Amen.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray:

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

PRE-COMMUNION ANTHEM                                  S154

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for

Celebrant  The gifts of God for the people of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

WELCOME TO THE TABLE

All are welcome to receive the Body and Blood of Christ, without exception. The usher will direct you when to come forward (those in the back of the room come first). Cup your hands together to receive the bread and when the wine is offered, either dip your wafer in the wine or assist the chalice bearer to guide the cup to your lips. Alternately, you may cross your hands over your chest to indicate you wish a blessing from the priest. The elements will be brought to those who are unable to come forward.

COMMUNION MUSIC

THE THANKSGIVING

Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image and nourishing us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of Christ’s Body and Blood. Now send us forth a people forgiven, healed, renewed; that we may proclaim your love to the world and continue in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen.

THE BLESSING

Celebrant     Sisters and brothers, we go out into the world in peace, as part of God’s beloved community. May God help us all to be of good courage, to hold on to what is good, to return to no one an evil for an evil. Strengthen the faint-hearted, support the weak, aid the suffering, honor all people, and let our gentleness be known by everyone. May God, who raised our Lord Jesus from death, lift us up and restore us to wholeness. And may God bless us all, ☩ in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

HYMN #544 BLUE                  Jesus Shall Reign, v. 1-4

Jesus shall reign where e’er the sun doth his successive journeys run; his kingdom stretch from shore to shore, ’till moons shall wax and wane no more.

To him shall endless prayer be made, and praises throng to crown his head; his Name like sweet perfume shall rise with every morning sacrifice.

People and realms of every tongue dwell on his love with sweetest song; and infant voices shall proclaim their early blessings on his Name.

Blessings abound where e’er he reigns: the prisoner leaps to lose their chains, the weary find eternal rest, and all who suffer want are blest.

THE DISMISSAL

Celebrant    Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Alleluia, Alleluia!

People         Thanks be to God. Alleluia, Alleluia!
