PRELUDE MUSIC (a time for silent reflection)

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

HYMN #551 BLUE                               Rise Up, Ye Saints of God

Rise up, ye saints of God! Have done with lesser things, give heart and soul and mind and strength to serve the King of kings.

Rise up, ye saints of God! His kingdom tarries long: Lord, bring the day of truth and love and end the night of wrong.

Lift high the cross of Christ! Tread where his feet have trod, and quickened by the Spirit’s power, rise up, ye saints of God!

SIGN OF THE CROSS

People        In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

 Celebrant    Alleluia! Christ is risen.

People        The Lord has risen indeed. Alleluia!

Celebrant    Beloved God, as we approach your presence guide and stir us with your Holy Spirit, that we may become one body, one spirit in Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

SONG OF PRAISE #410 BLUE                      Praise My Soul the King of Heaven

Praise, my soul, the King of heaven; to his feet your tribute bring. Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, evermore his praises sing. Alleluia, alleluia! Praise the everlasting King!

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

Celebrant             The Lord be with you.

People           And also with you.

Celebrant             Let us pray.

Almighty God, you have given your only Son to be for us a sacrifice for sin, and also an example of godly life: Give us grace to receive thankfully the fruits of his redeeming work, and to follow daily in the blessed steps of his most holy life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

A Reading from the book of Hebrews                       12:1-3

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such hostility against himself from sinners, so that you may not grow weary or lose heart.

Reader        The Word of the Lord.

People         Thanks be to God.

Let us say together Psalm 82

God takes his stand in the council of heaven; he gives judgment in the midst of the gods:

“How long will you judge unjustly, and show favor to the wicked?

Save the weak and the orphan; defend the humble and needy;

Rescue the weak and the poor; deliver them from the power of the wicked.

They do not know, neither do they understand; they go about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken.

Now I say to you, ‘You are gods, and all of you children of the Most High;

Nevertheless, you shall die like mortals, and fall like any prince.’”

Arise, O God, and rule the earth, for you shall take all nations for your own.

HYMN #435 BLUE                      At the Name of Jesus v. 1-3

At the Name of Jesus, every knee shall bow, every tongue confess him King of glory now; is the Father’s pleasure we should call him Lord, who from the beginning was the mighty Word.

 Humbled for a season, to receive a Name from the lips of sinners, unto whom he came, faithfully he bore it spotless to the last, brought it back victorious when from death he passed;

Bore it up triumphant, with its human light, through all ranks of creatures, to the central height, to the throne of Godhead, to the Father’s breast; filled it with the glory of that perfect rest.

THE GOSPEL                                        Luke 12:49-68

Celebrant    The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.

People         Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said to his disciples, “Do not be afraid, little flock, for I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! I have a baptism with which to be baptized, and what stress I am under until it is completed! Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division! From now on five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three; they will be divided: father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and the daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

He also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say, ‘It is going to rain’; and so it happens. And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat’, and it happens. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?

Celebrant    The Gospel of the Lord.

People         Praise to you, Lord Christ.

SERMON                                                                                                          Pastor Neil

THE NICENE CREED (please stand)

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him, all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit, he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day, he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son, he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.  We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.  Amen.

Holy, holy, holy God: fill us with strength and courage, discernment and compassion, that we may be your instruments of justice, witness, and love in this world; that it may be on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.

Let us confess our sins to God: (Silence may be kept)

 Celebrant and People

God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you,

opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world, you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen.

Celebrant

Almighty God have mercy on you ☩, forgive you all your sins

through the grace of Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

OFFERTORY SENTENCE

Celebrant    Let us with gladness present the offerings and gifts of our life and labor to the Lord. (Please be seated)

HYMN #583 BLUE                                              O Holy City, v. 1-3

O holy city, seen of John, where Christ, the Lamb, doth reign, within those four-square walls shall come no night, nor need, nor pain, and where the tears are wiped from eyes that shall not weep again!

O shame to us who rest content while lust and greed for gain in street and shop and tenement wring gold from human pain, and bitter lips in blind despair cry, “Christ hath died in vain!”

Give us, O God, the strength to build the city that hath stood too long a dream, whose laws are love, whose crown is servanthood, and where the sun that shineth is God’s grace for human good.

Celebrant     Please stand as you are able.

PRESENTATION HYMN #513 BLUE          Like the Murmur of the Dove’s Song v. 1-2

Like the murmur of the dove’s song, like the challenge of her flight, like the vigor of the wind’s rush, like the new flame’s eager might: come, Holy Spirit, come.

To the members of Christ’s Body, to the branches of the Vine, to the Church in faith assembled, to her midst as gift and sign: come, Holy Spirit, come.

THE HOLY COMMUNION

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

Celebrant            The Lord be with you.

People                  And also with you.

Celebrant             Lift up your hearts.

People                   We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant             Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People                   It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is truly right to glorify you, Father, and to give you thanks; for you alone are God, living and true, dwelling in light inaccessible from before time and forever. Fountain of life and source of all goodness, you made all things and fill them with your blessing; you created them to rejoice in the splendor of your radiance.

Countless throngs of angels stand before you to serve you night and day; and, beholding the glory of your presence, they offer you unceasing praise. Joining with them, and giving voice to every creature under heaven, we acclaim you, and glorify your Name, as we sing:

SANCTUS                                                                           S-130

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest, Hosanna in the highest.

We acclaim you, holy Lord, glorious in power. You formed us in your own image, giving the whole world into our care so that we might rule and serve all your creatures. In our sinfulness, you did not abandon us. In mercy, you came to our help, so that we might find you. Again and again, you called us into covenant with you. Through the prophets, and the mothers and fathers of the church, you taught us to hope for salvation.

You loved the world so much that you sent your only Son to be our Savior. Incarnate by the Holy Spirit, born of Mary, he lived as one of us. To the poor, he proclaimed the good news of salvation; to prisoners, freedom; to the sorrowful, joy. He gave himself up to death; and, rising from the grave, he made the whole creation anew. He sent the Holy Spirit to complete his work in the world, to bring to fulfillment the sanctification of all.

When the hour had come for him to be glorified by you, and having loved his own who were in the world, at supper with them he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat: This is my body, given for you.”

After supper he took the wine; again, he offered thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink this: It is the blood of the new Covenant, shed for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you do these things, do them for the remembrance of me.”

Said together We celebrate this memorial of our redemption. We recall Christ’s death and proclaim his resurrection and ascension to your right hand. We await his coming in glory.

We offer to you, from the gifts you have given us, this bread and this cup; we praise you and we bless you.

In your goodness and mercy, may your Holy Spirit descend upon us, and upon these gifts, ☩ sanctifying them—the bread of life and the cup of salvation. Grant that all who share this bread and cup may become one body and one spirit, a living sacrifice in Christ.

Ensure our inheritance with your Mother Mary, with prophets, apostles, and all the saints who have found favor with you, through your Son Jesus Christ.

Said together Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, forever and ever. Amen.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray:

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

PRE-COMMUNION ANTHEM                                  S154

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; therefore, let us keep the feast. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Celebrant   The gifts of God for the people of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

WELCOME TO THE TABLE

All are welcome to receive the Body and Blood of Christ, without exception. The usher will direct you when to come forward (those in the back of the room come first). Cup your hands together to receive the bread and when the wine is offered, either dip your wafer in the wine or assist the chalice bearer to guide the cup to your lips. Alternately, you may cross your hands over your chest to indicate you wish a blessing from the priest. The elements will be brought to those who are unable to come forward.

COMMUNION MUSIC

THE THANKSGIVING

Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image and nourishing us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of Christ’s Body and Blood. Now send us forth a people forgiven, healed, renewed; that we may proclaim your love to the world and continue in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen.

THE BLESSING

Celebrant     Sisters and brothers, we go out into the world in peace, as part of God’s beloved community. May God help us all to be of good courage, to hold on to what is good, to return to no one an evil for an evil. Strengthen the faint-hearted, support the weak, aid the suffering, honor all people, and let our gentleness be known by everyone. May God, who raised our Lord Jesus from death, lift us up and restore us to wholeness. And may God bless us all, ☩ in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

HYMN #57 BLUE                             Lo, He Comes with Clouds Descending

Lo! he comes, with clouds descending, once for our salvation slain; thousand thousand saints attending swell the triumph of his train: Alleluia! alleluia! alleluia! Christ the Lord returns to reign.

 Every eye shall now behold him, robed in dreadful majesty;
those who set at nought and sold him, pierced, and nailed him to the tree, deeply wailing, deeply wailing, deeply wailing, shall the true Messiah see.

Those dear tokens of his passion still his dazzling body bears,
cause of endless exultation to his ransomed worshipers;
with what rapture, with what rapture, with what rapture
gaze we on those glorious scars!

Yea, amen! let all adore thee, high on thine eternal throne; Savior, take the power and glory; claim the kingdom for thine own: Alleluia! alleluia! alleluia! Thou shalt reign, and thou alone.

THE DISMISSAL

Celebrant    Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Alleluia, Alleluia!

People         Thanks be to God. Alleluia, Alleluia!
