Bulletin – 9/22 Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost
PRELUDE MUSIC (a time for silent reflection)
WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
HYMN #723 RED Shall We Gather at the River
Shall we gather at the river, where bright angel feet have trod, with its crystal tide forever, flowing by the throne of God?
Refrain: Yes, we’ll gather at the river, the beautiful, the beautiful river; gather with the saints at the river, that flows by the throne of God.
On the margin of the river, washing up its silver spray, we will walk and worship ever, all the happy golden day. (Refrain)
Ere we reach the shining river, lay we every burden down; grace our spirits will deliver, and provide a robe and crown. (Refrain)
Soon we’ll reach the shining river, soon our pilgrimage will cease; soon our happy hearts will quiver with the melody of peace. (Refrain)
SIGN OF THE CROSS

HYMN #551 BLUE Rise Up, Ye Saints of God
Rise up, ye saints of God! Have done with lesser things, give heart and soul and mind and strength to serve the King of kings.
THE COLLECT OF THE DAY
Celebrant The Lord be with you.
People And also with you.
Celebrant Let us pray.
Grant us, Lord, not to be anxious about earthly things, but to love things that are heavenly. Even now, while we live among things that are passing away, hold fast to those things that shall endure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
A Reading from the book of Timothy 2:1-8
First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
For there is one God; there is also one mediator between God and humankind, Christ Jesus, himself human, who gave himself a ransom for all—this was attested at the right time. For this I was appointed a herald and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. I desire, then, that in every place the faithful should pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or argument.
Reader The Word of the Lord.
People Thanks be to God.
Let us say together Psalm 113
Praise the Lord! Praise, O servants of the Lord; praise the name of the Lord.
Blessed be the name of the Lord from this time on and forevermore.
From the rising of the sun to its setting the name of the Lord is to be praised.
The Lord is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens.
Who is like the Lord our God, who is seated on high, who looks far down on the heavens and the earth?
He raises the poor from the dust, and lifts the needy from the ash heap, to make them sit with princes, with the princes of his people.
He gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children. Praise the Lord!
HYMN #182 RED Word of God, Come Down on Earth
Word of God, come down on earth, living rain from heaven descending; touch our hearts and bring to birth faith and hope and love unending. Word almighty, we revere you; Word made flesh, we long to hear you.
Word eternal, throned on high, Word that brought to life creation; Word that came from heaven to die, crucified for our salvation; saving Word, the world restoring, speak to us, your love outpouring.
Word that caused blind eyes to see, speak and heal our mortal blindness; deaf we are: our healer be, loose our tongues to tell your kindness. Be our Word in pity spoken; heal the world, by our sin broken.
Word that speaks your Father’s love, one with God beyond all telling;, Word that sends us from above God, the Spirit, with us dwelling; Word of truth, to all truth lead us; Word of life, with one Bread feed us.
THE GOSPEL Luke 16:1-13
Celebrant The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.
People Glory to you, Lord Christ.
Then Jesus said to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was squandering his property. So, he summoned him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear about you? Give me an accounting of your management, because you cannot be my manager any longer.’ Then the manager said to himself, ‘What will I do, now that my master is taking the position away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. I have decided what to do so that, when I am dismissed as manager, people may welcome me into their homes.’
“So, summoning his master’s debtors one by one, he asked the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ The man answered, ‘A hundred jugs of olive oil.’ The manager said to him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it fifty.’ Then he asked another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ He replied, ‘A hundred containers of wheat.’ The manager said to him, ‘Take your bill and make it eighty.’ Afterwards, his master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light. And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth so that when it is gone, they may welcome you into the eternal homes.
“Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much. If then you have not been faithful with the dishonest wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you what is your own? No slave can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.”
Celebrant The Gospel of the Lord.
People Praise to you, Lord Christ.
SERMON Pastor Neil
THE NICENE CREED (please stand)
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son, he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
In calling forth creation from the void, God, you revealed yourself in human form. You manifest your concern for your whole universe. Hear the world’s needs, as we bring the matters of our hearts before you.
Pour out your life-giving Spirit on your holy church throughout the world and equip its members to boldly proclaim their common faith and your bountiful blessings to the world. Lord, in your mercy: Hear our prayer.
Let your Spirit move over our unruly time and heal its people broken in spirit and body. Bring peace to a weary and struggling world. Protect Mother Earth from human neglect. Lord, in your mercy: Hear our prayer.
Burn out all that is evil in us; consecrate us for holy service and empower us to work toward the salvation of the world. Give us energy and insight for the mission. Lord, in your mercy: Hear our prayer.
Renew the faith of all those who call you Lord, so that we may devote ourselves to worship, teaching, and prayer—all to reveal your grace, mercy, and healing to a fragile humanity. Give noble purpose to our secular leaders, and a desire to do justice in the land and in the world. Lord, in your mercy: Hear our prayer.
Be with those who are dying and ill, and their families and loved ones. Bless the pastoral ministries of this congregation. Safeguard immigrants and refugees. Provide solace and healing to those beleaguered by hurricanes, floods, and fires. Lord, in your mercy: Hear our prayer.
We especially pray for those we name now… (please add your petitions). Lord, in your mercy: Hear our prayer.
Holy, holy, holy God: fill us with strength and courage, discernment and compassion, that we may be your instruments of justice, witness, and love in this world; that it may be on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.
Let us confess our sins to God: (Silence may be kept)
Celebrant and People
God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you,
opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen.
Almighty God have mercy on you ☩, forgive you all your sins
through the grace of Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.
Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you.
People And also with you.
(Please greet one another in the name of the Lord.)
Celebrant Let us with gladness present the offerings and gifts of our life and labor to the Lord. (Please be seated)
HYMN #693 BLUE Just As I Am, v. 1, 4-5
Just as I am, without one plea, but that thy blood was shed for me, and that thou bidd’st me come to thee, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
Just as I am: thou wilt receive; wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve, because thy promise I believe, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
Just as I am, thy love unknown has broken every barrier down; now to be thine, yea, thine alone, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
Celebrant Please stand as you are able.
PRESENTATION HYMN #95 RED Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
THE HOLY COMMUNION
THE GREAT THANKSGIVING
Celebrant The Lord be with you.
People And also with you.
Celebrant Lift up your hearts.
People We lift them to the Lord.
Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People It is right to give our thanks and praise.
It is truly right to glorify you, Father, and to give you thanks; for you alone are God, living and true, dwelling in light inaccessible from before time and forever. Fountain of life and source of all goodness, you made all things and fill them with your blessing; you created them to rejoice in the splendor of your radiance.
Countless throngs of angels stand before you to serve you night and day; and, beholding the glory of your presence, they offer you unceasing praise. Joining with them, and giving voice to every creature under heaven, we acclaim you, and glorify your Name, as we sing:
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest, Hosanna in the highest.
We acclaim you, holy Lord, glorious in power. You formed us in your own image, giving the whole world into our care, so that we might rule and serve all your creatures. In our sinfulness, you did not abandon us. In mercy you came to our help, so that we might find you. Again, and again you called us into covenant with you. Through the prophets, and the mothers and fathers of the church, you taught us to hope for salvation.
You loved the world so much that you sent your only Son to be our Savior. Incarnate by the Holy Spirit, born of Mary, he lived as one of us. To the poor he proclaimed the good news of salvation; to prisoners, freedom; to the sorrowful, joy. He gave himself up to death; and, rising from the grave, he made the whole creation anew. He sent the Holy Spirit to complete his work in the world, to bring to fulfillment the sanctification of all.
When the hour had come for him to be glorified by you, and having loved his own who were in the world, at supper with them he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat: This is my body, given for you.”
Then after supper he took the wine; again, he offered thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink this: It is the blood of the new Covenant, shed for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you do these things, do them for the remembrance of me.”
Said together: We celebrate this memorial of our redemption. We recall Christ’s death and proclaim his resurrection and ascension to your right hand. We await his coming in glory.
We offer to you, from the gifts you have given us, this bread and this cup; we praise you and we bless you.
In your goodness and mercy, may your Holy Spirit descend upon us, and upon these gifts, ☩ sanctifying them—the bread of life and the cup of salvation. Grant that all who share this bread and cup may become one body and one spirit, a living sacrifice in Christ.
Ensure our inheritance with your Mother Mary, with prophets, apostles, and all the saints who have found favor with you, through your Son Jesus Christ.
Said together: Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, forever and ever. Amen.
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray:
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
PRE-COMMUNION ANTHEM S154
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for
us; therefore, let us keep the feast. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Celebrant The gifts of God for the people of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.
WELCOME TO THE TABLE
All are welcome to receive the Body and Blood of Christ, without exception. The usher will direct you when to come forward (those in the back of the room come first). Cup your hands together to receive the bread and when the wine is offered, either dip your wafer in the wine or assist the chalice bearer to guide the cup to your lips. Alternately, you may cross your hands over your chest to indicate you wish a blessing from the priest. The elements will be brought to those who are unable to come forward.
Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image and nourishing us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of Christ’s Body and Blood. Now send us forth a people forgiven, healed, renewed; that we may proclaim your love to the world and continue in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen.
Celebrant Sisters and brothers, we go out into the world in peace, as part of God’s beloved community. May God help us all to be of good courage, to hold on to what is good, to return to no one an evil for an evil. Strengthen the faint-hearted, support the weak, aid the suffering, honor all people, and let our gentleness be known by everyone. May God, who raised our Lord Jesus from death, lift us up and restore us to wholeness. And may God bless us all, ☩ in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
HYMN #368 BLUE Holy Father, Great Creator
Holy Father, great Creator, source of mercy, love, and peace, look upon the Mediator, clothe us with his righteousness; heavenly Father, heavenly Father, through the Savior hear and bless.
Holy Jesus, Lord of glory, whom angelic hosts proclaim, while we hear thy wondrous story, meet and worship in thy Name, dear Redeemer, dear Redeemer, in our hearts thy peace proclaim.
Holy Spirit, Sanctifier, come with unction from above, touch our hearts with sacred fire, fill them with the Savior’s love. Source of comfort, Source of comfort, cheer us with the Savior’s love.
God the Lord, through every nation let thy wondrous mercies shine. In the song of thy salvation every tongue and race combine. Great Jehovah, great Jehovah, form our hearts and make them thine.
Celebrant Go in peace to love and serve the Lord by loving and serving each other and the world. Alleluia, Alleluia!
People Thanks be to God. Alleluia, Alleluia!
