A Meditation
Pictures of Mary Magdalene, obviously from scripture one of Jesus’ closest friends, barring none, is pictured with a jar for unguents. She is known down through history as among the smallest group of his followers who anointed his body for its burial. The passion and the Easter Sunday stories from scripture have Mary Magdalene at the tomb after his death. In the version we’re using from John this morning, she is first of his followers who sees and talks with him after he leaves the tomb. Jesus tells her not to hang onto him physically. We know from several post-resurrection accounts, Jesus was enlivened and enfleshed, but even though his corporeal remains existed still tied to earth, they were also already heading toward his ascension. Jesus did not want Mary to drag him back to earth. Jesus has things he wanted to teach his beloved followers still, but Jesus’ work was mostly completed.
This is the point too far for most people who are not Christian. There is an understandable bipolarity of being alive or dead, being here or there. It’s a forced choice: one or the other, but absolutely not both. Easter is a sticking point that can’t be breeched; or else, Easter is precisely the sticking point that has been blown up and transcended. I defy even the most learned theologian to explain the resurrection with much aplomb. Language in not a fit vessel to understand Jesus’ life. The early church understood this, and we also became vastly more clear down through the generations. Starting with four gospels, books of Christian theology exist in un-countable tonnage. I still buy books, still searching for the best words to describe Jesus, his life, the miracles, his death, and resurrection—yet words are the leakiest vessel indeed to get close to the faith reality that we stake our lives on.
That should not surprise us. Who can describe what is sublime, big or small? When we ask “How or why?” we never get a satisfactory answer. And those are the precise questions we ask when we think about Jesus, and this glorious mystery we call resurrection. Like Mary Magdalene’s unguent bottle, we know it contains something that is sweet, pungent, savory, slippery, precious, rare, of inestimable worth, among other qualities. The ointment for a King, the Son of God. This balm within the pot is made of common, earthly substances, not of our satisfactory describing. Real, nonetheless.

What then are we to say? Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. For whoever has died is freed from sin.
But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So, she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in.
Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for, as yet, they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples returned to their homes.
But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.”
When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni!” (which means Teacher).
Jesus said to her, “Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”; and she told them that he had said these things to her.

THE NICENE CREED
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home. By your will they were created and have their being.
From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another. Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight.
Again and again, you called us to return to your fold. Through prophets and sages you revealed your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent your only Son, born of a woman, to fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace. By his blood, he reconciled us. By his wounds, we are healed.
