Fourteenth Sunday After Pentecost

A Meditation

 The Bible operates as poetry. In fact, much of the Bible is literally poetry. Thank of Psalms for example. I was taught by one Bible scholar (this is a little easier on the computer where you can edit the text) to take a scripture passage, particularly one that you’re having trouble getting to its heart—take the passage and put it in the form of free verse poetry. Some long and some short lines. Punctuation showing up weirdly. One verse either brief or long. No matter.

The goal is to get so into the text so that you’ll come out the other side— having experienced unexpected insights. This is not so strange when we consider how much of the Bible has been put to music. This is often the best way to memorize scripture. Consider all of those stirring lines from Handel’s Messiah.

Today, the first reading is part of one of the most beautiful love poems ever written. God does not make an appearance in this text, notwithstanding centuries of attempts to make the poem about our relationship with him. Purely, Song of Songs extols the passionate love between a man and a woman. This is a blessed union that exists in the realm of the commitment and love between two persons.

We tend to discourage ourselves from making the Bible hit too close to home. Hence the failed attempt to make its beautiful lines about divine love rather than human love. Many of us would wonder why singing of the love between two human beings as “not quite good enough.” Just as God invited Adam and Eve to love each other and be fruitful and multiply; as well as Abraham and Sarah, who were going to be the parents of a great county, God seems to have a deep investment in human beings embarking in the sacred work of parenthood. Embarrassment of marriage and parenthood should not be shameful and hidden. It is a singular gift from God.

From the Epistle of James At The 1st Chapter

James 1:17-27

Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. In fulfillment of his own purpose he gave us birth by the word of truth, so that we would become a kind of first fruits of his creatures.

You must understand this, my beloved: let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger; for your anger does not produce God’s righteousness. Therefore, rid yourselves of all sordidness and rank growth of wickedness, and welcome with meekness the implanted word that has the power to save your souls.

But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves. For if any are hearers of the word and not doers, they are like those who look at themselves in a mirror; for they look at themselves and, on going away, immediately forget what they were like. But those who look into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and persevere, being not hearers who forget but doers who act-they will be blessed in their doing.

If any think they are religious, and do not bridle their tongues but deceive their hearts, their religion is worthless. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

A Reading from the Gospel of Mark, at the 7th Chapter

Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

When the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus, they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with defiled hands; that is, without washing them. (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they thoroughly wash their hands, thus observing the tradition of the elders; and they do not eat anything from the market unless they wash it; and there are also many other traditions that they observe, the washing of cups, pots, and bronze kettles.) So, the Pharisees and the scribes asked Jesus, “Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?”

He said to them, “Isaiah prophesied rightly about you hypocrites, as it is written,

“This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching human precepts as doctrines. You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition.”

Then Jesus called the crowd again and said to them, “Listen to me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile. For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”

Prayers of the People

 Reader     In peace, we pray to you, Lord God—

Grant, Almighty God, that all who confess your name may be united in your truth, live together in your love, and reveal your glory in the world. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Guide the people of this land, and of all nations, in the ways of justice and peace; that we may honor one another and serve the common good. Heal the rifts that bind, vex, and scare us. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Give us all a reverence for the earth as your own creation, that we may use its resources rightly in the service of others and to your honor and glory. Heal the wounds of those who have been victimized by climate change and destruction. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Bless all whose lives are closely linked with ours, and grant that we may serve Christ in them, and love one another as he loves us. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

The Lord’s Prayer

 People      Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

 

A Call to Communion

Celebrant   The gifts of God for the people of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

 

The Blessing

Celebrant         Sisters and brothers, we go out into the world in peace. We live and walk as part of God’s beloved community. May God help us all to be of good courage, to hold on to what is good, and to return to no one an evil for an evil. Strengthen the faint-hearted, support the weak, aid the suffering, do justice, honor all people, and let our gentleness be known by everyone. May God, who raised our Lord Jesus from death, lift us up and restore us to wholeness. And may God bless us all, ☩ in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

A miqvah, or miqveh, is a Jewish ritual bath, used for purification. In 1492 the Jews were expelled from all territories of the kings of Spain and Aragon (which also Syracuse, with the whole Southern Italy, belonged to), the Jewish community of Syracuse, hoping to return home one day in the future, hid the access to its own mikveh, obstructing it completely.

That’s probably why the miqvah of Ortygia (Syracuse, Sicily) located 18 meters below ground level (roughly 30 feet) and fed by pure spring water, is one of the few Jewish ritual baths in Europe that still retains its integrity and charm. This is probably the oldest Jewish ritual bath in the whole Europe: the period of construction seems to be the sixth century AD, in the middle Byzantine period.

The Mikvah of Syracuse is today a main rectangular room, entirely carved into limestone rock and supported by four pillars, with three tanks dug below the floor level. The water of the mikvah was meant to be necessarily “living water,” which means that it needed to be able to flow in and flow out without any human intervention. Thus, living water. The constant infiltration of groundwater at that depth ensured that free flowing characteristic. This was the reason why the excavation of this environment penetrated so deeply into the rock.

The Talmud describes the mikveh, which remains part of Jewish culture today, for both women and increasingly often for men, as “a vehicle of ritual purity.” Worshippers immersed themselves fully in a bath drawn from a natural source, such as a spring or rainwater, for purposes ranging from religious conversion to healing and preparing for marriage. Dozens, if not hundreds, of historic ritual baths are scattered across Israel. Though most are found in private homes and public buildings, a small number were built in more open spaces, near agricultural structures and tombs.
