A Meditation

One of the oldest techniques of biblical storytelling is called harmonization. This is the process of putting two different stories together as if they were always a single story. One of the prime examples of this is converging the nativity stories of the shepherds and the magi, or wise men. The former is from the gospel of Luke, and the latter from the gospel of Matthew.

The story of the wise men cries out for harmonization. While shepherds were commonplace in ancient Palestine, but astrologers much less so. Putting them one beside the other, the exotic nature of both of these stories can be smoothed over somewhat, particularly the story of the men traveling from far away to visit the Christ child. In the harmonization certain facts become elided. They are obvious, right in front of our eyes, but virtually unseen because they recede to the background through familiarity.

In the Luke story the action takes place in a stable, but in the Matthew story, the wise men visit Jesus and Mary in their home. To make logic of the story arch, we must see the story as discontinuous. The shepherd story happened significantly before the wise men story.

Luke’s gospel has amazing details, but it is also located in the domestic, village life of the ancient Mideast. While the particulars that Luke’s gospel recounters are strange, it’s not completely implausible to imagine a separate realm of angel choirs, virgin birth, and a manger stall being where to find an infant. A story about Magi pilgrims, it helps if it also includes commonplace shepherds to take the edge off. The nativity story needs grounding. Harmonizing Luke and Matthew makes the narrative pieces fit together better.

Arise, shine; for your light has come,
and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.

and kings to the brightness of your dawn.
Lift up your eyes and look around;
they all gather together, they come to you;

THE GOSPEL

Matthew 2:1-12

In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.” When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet:
`And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
who is to shepherd my people Israel.'”
Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.”
When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

For by water and the Holy Spirit, you have made us a new people in Jesus Christ our Savior, to show forth your glory in all the world. Therefore, we praise your name and join angels and archangels by saying:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. ☩ Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself. When we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you in your mercy sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself
in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole
world.

On the night before his death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanks- giving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. ☩ Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. ☩ Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace. And at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ.
By him, and with him, and in him,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit
all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father,
now and forever. Amen.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray:

 

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

 

THE CALL TO COMMUNION

Celebrant The gifts of God for the people of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

Celebrant Almighty and ever-living God,

All We thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and forever. Amen

THE BLESSING

Celebrant Sisters and brothers, we go out into the world in peace. We live and walk as part of God’s beloved community. May God help us all to be of good courage, to hold on to what is good, and to return to no one an evil for an evil. Strengthen the faint-hearted, support the weak, aid the suffering; do justice, honor all people, and let our gentleness be known by everyone. May God, who raised our Lord Jesus from death, lift us up and restore us to wholeness. And may God bless us all, ☩ in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

MORE ABOUT THE ARTWORK ON THIS BULLETIN COVER

In the 1550s Pieter Aertsen produced several major altarpieces, however, little remains of them, since many were destroyed in the Iconoclasm of 1566. Two panels are in the Rijksmuseum which once belonged to the same triptych with the Adoration of the Magi: the larger being the central panel.

Pieter Aertsen (1508 – 2 June 1575),[1] called Lange Piet (“Tall Pete”) because of his height, was a Dutch painter in the style of the northern Renaissance. He is credited with the invention of the monumental genre scene, which combines still life and genre painting and often also includes a biblical scene. He was active in his native city Amsterdam but also worked for a long period in Antwerp, then the center of artistic life in the Netherlands. His genre scenes were influential on later Flemish Baroque painting,

After beginning by painting religious works, in the 1550s he developed the painting of domestic scenes in which he reproduced articles of furniture, cooking utensils, and food with great flair and realism.

Later in life, he also painted conventional treatments of religious subjects, now mostly lost. Several paintings that had been commissioned for Catholic churches were destroyed. Several of his best works, including altarpieces in various churches in Amsterdam, were also destroyed during the days surrounding the event known as the Alteratie, or “Changeover”, when Amsterdam formally reverted to Protestantism from Catholicism on 26 May 1578 at the start of the Eighty Years’ War.
